*I did this tutorial when the face was just 70% finished so PLEASE ignore it. Sorry for the inconsistent lighting as the light changed all the time during the day when I took the photos*

1. My tools, from left to right: HB & B 0.3 Mech pencil, 2B 0.5 Mech pencil, 9B graphite stick (to render the big area), 8B/9B Derwent Graphic (for medium to dark lines/shading), 8B Staedtler Mars Lumograph (for the darkest shade of black), Sharpened erasers (just normal erasers cut into small pieces in triangle shape), blending sticks

2. The reference picture

3. Sketch the hair roughly just to get the OUTLINE of the hair. Render all over the inside area using graphite stick or any unsharp medium tone wooden pencil.

4. Blend it using tissue paper (you can use your finger but I'll NEVER use mine.:police:). Divide the hair into sections based on the reference. Pay more attention to the chunk of hair and ignore the flyaway part.

5. & 6. Use the sharp edge of the erasers creating the strands. Do this in sections starting from left to right, bottom leyer to top layer. Make sure you follow the direction of hair from the ref. You can do this quickly and roughly as it's to be used mainly as a guideline for step 7.

7. Add the strands using mech pencil for the lighter areas and the second darkest pencil you have (mine is 8B/9B Derwent graphic) for the darker areas and shadow.

8. Now the serious part. Add highlight, light strands, & flyaway hair using sharpened erasers. This time make sure the erasers are sharp as they'll give a lot better result. Define the strands that look too chunky with 0.3 mech pencils. Use blending stick to solften the contrast and creat the grey area.

9. Render the darkest areas and add the shadow between & underneath each hair layer using the darkest pencil you have (Mine is 8B Staedtler Mars Lumograph).:XD:

So there you go.:XD:

**Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions. I've never done this before so I have no idea if I explained it well enough. Sorry if it's unclear and confusing.

*** This tutorial is for light - medium hair only. I do things differently for the dark/black hair-->[link] ***

**** I always fix up the hair while finishing up the other parts of the drawing so if you want to see the final result you have to see the completed drawing -->[link] ****

lol...I know people don't do the hair the way I do. I've read a few hair tutorials and they do it the way you do.:XD:

When I do the dark hair I don't use this technique though. I draw it straight away too.:D

you could be my saviour!! I get this kind of dyslexia with hair. I can divide up the areas, and yes I've used erasers for years, but this looks the best way. So I'll try it all soon. I'm currently drawing a dark haired girl so maybe next one I'll choose a blonde.. Thankyou, I shall refer to that often!!!

Handle every stressful situation like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it,
Just pee on it and walk away.

It's a very unique way of drawing hair, but it seems like it works perfectly fine :)

Awesome. It's a great tutorial!

Awesome, huge thanks for this tutorial! To be honest I don't plan any photo-realistic drawings any time soon, but if I ever do I'll know where to come to do hair =)

If this tutorial can be any helpful to you I'll be VERY happy. I've read a few hair tutorials and they all did it differently that I was worried if I'd done it in a wrong way..lol..:XD:
